Abstract
Exegetical narrations are a collection of traditions make meaning, some of which may initially appear problematic. For example, some narrations concerning the verse "this Qur'an was revealed so that I may warn you thereby, and whoever it reaches" interpret "whoever " as referring to the infallible Imam. "This Qur'an was revealed to me so that I, along with the Imam who attains the station of Imamate, may warn you through it." However, this interpretation poses several challenges.
First, it relies on a non-literal grammatical construal, a concealed conjunction .
Second, its application to the infallible Imam is difficult to reconcile with the verse's apparent meaning.
It raises the question of how this reading can be harmonized with the verse’s apparent meaning.
These challenges prompt the present study to employ a source-content analytical method to unravel the complexities of such narrations. By examining related traditions from the same textual family, as well as parallel narrations that endorse non-literal interpretations, this article reevaluates the validity of exegetical approaches. The article argues that the traditional view of scriptural authority, which considers the most apparent semantic possibility to be the sole determinate meaning and divine intent, lies at the root of such interpretive dilemmas.
