Abstract

In some early and late Shia and Sunni gatherings, there is a narration with the content that Hazrat Zahra said in response to the question of the Messenger of God: "The best thing for women is not to see a man and men to see them" (with some differences in the narration).

The purpose of this study is to examine the documents and brokers of the mentioned narrative. The result of the analysis of the hadith's authenticity shows that the mentioned hadith is authentic in the Shia sources, and the sources of the Sunnis also suffer from the weakness of the sources of the chain of transmission.

However, in examining the text and the meaning of the narration, regardless of the discussion of the chain of transmission and especially considering the support of this hadith by other hadiths, first of all, the sanctity of women's presence in the congregation cannot be obtained from this narration; And secondly, this hadith does not express any mandatory ruling indicating action or omission; Rather, it is an expression of a guiding principle, moral value, religious truth, and social reality, and that is: the less direct contact between a non-mahram man and woman, the better.
