Abstract

The present article deals with the role, place and limits of reason and narration in the commentary on monotheistic traditions in the book Usul Kafi from Allameh Majlisi's point of view, and this issue is studied in his words about the place of reason and narration and his usage of these two sources of understanding of religion. His approach to monotheistic traditions is in several ways: he believes in a rational method in understanding issues like proving God's Essence and His perfect attributes such as knowledge, power and wisdom; In issues like the monotheism of attributes, the identity of attributes with His Essence and being far from body, time and place, he believes in both, the rational and narrative methods, and in discussing on issues such as empirical knowledge and doubts about fate and destiny, he only uses the narrative method. It seems that the definitions and explanations presented by him, indicate his systematicity in the rational and narrative method, and are a rejection of those who absolutely emphasize on his rationalism or narrativism.
